The worst sinner in the world

Who is the worst sinner in the world? How would you answer that question? Is it a brutal dictator of a bygone era who persecuted people and murdered millions or maybe we think of someone who committed horrific crimes and was the subject of a bright media spotlight?

There are many names that we would throw into the mix when asked to identify someone whom we would call "the worst sinner in the world." Yet when the apostle Paul thinks of the answer to this question, he simply looks in the mirror.

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - of whom I am the worst" (1 Timothy 1:15). When it comes to his personal spirituality and his spiritual life, Paul does not look down at you, nor does he look across at you, but he looks up at you. He places himself at the bottom because he realizes how much he had failed God, but more than that how much God wanted to do in his life.

He continues: "But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory forever and ever. Amen" (1 Timothy 1:16-17).  And we add, Amen.
