As one reads the Old Testament, this statement comes to mind.
We read of the Children of Israel delivered from slavery in Egypt by miracles from God who, in a few months, choose another god - a golden calf. During the Exodus from Egypt to the Promised Land, they abandoned God several times.
In the Book of Judges, we read the statement, "And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord." repeatedly. How could they do this? The disciples, after they had been told that Jesus had risen from the dead, doubted, and did not trust what Jesus had told them before. However, as we look at the history of our country, we may think the same.
Our forefathers came to this land celebrating the blessings of God. They responded in thanksgiving and worship. They gave glory to God. They shared with and cared for one another.
They showed in their lives that God loves each of us, and does not want to condemn us. He sent Jesus to take our punishment to save us from Hell. However, He will not force Himself into our lives.
How soon we forget. In the world today, with our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, we are so quick to protect our own rights that we miss opportunities or privileges of serving others. Our society encourages us to "look out for number one." We are taught that the only way to get ahead is to push others back.
Technology has only increased the selfishness and greed of individuals and communities. Now people can satisfy themselves in an instant. There is no thought of patience or putting others first. We seek faster wireless and other electronic services so that we can get our tickets online before others.
Also, because of our haste, instead of repairing we have become a "throw away" society. This seems to be in regard to people as well; not desiring to build others up, but only to tear down.
How soon we forget the word "responsibility." In past generations, it would have been unthinkable to do many things that are being done today. However, in this "me" time, I do what I want.
Competition pits person against person, community against community. We strive to be the winner by defeating the "losers" with our lavish ways. Whether it be in business, sports, or getting grant money, we work to show that we are number one. Are we placing ourselves or winning or other things in front of God? Or might it be that we are replacing God with these? How soon we forget!
