Bison beat Jr. Cards

Last Thursday the Melville Bison hosted the Yorkton Jr. Cardinals and came away with a 5-4 win, thanks in part to a rookie mistake by a Cardinals reliever.

"I don't really know what happened there, but maybe their coach should have just called time and come out of the dugout," offers Bisons spokesman Doug Martinook of the balk call which gave the Bison the game winning run.

After suffering a pair of one-sided losses to start the campaign, Martinook says the local boys will take the wins however they get them.

"Sometimes you need a greasy win and we'll sure take it," says Martinook. Benny Walchuk got the start on the bump for the Bison and he gave up all four Cards runs. Walchuk registered one strikeout while giving up six hits and three walks.

Jeremy Houle was solid in relief for the Melville crew, fanning four Yorkton batters and giving up three base-knocks. Fred Lowenberger and Walchuk led the way at the dish, each going three-forthree. Lowenberger also notched a run and a stolen base while Walchuk scored twice.

Jason Waldbauer was also carrying a big stick for the Bison, going two-for-four with a double and a triple to go along with a couple of RBI. Jarett Waldbauer also doubled and scored for the Bison with Travis Rathgeber and Houston each getting a single.
