The Weyburn Campus of Southeast Regional College hosted a presentation on February 4, awarding 22 of its students with scholarships and bursaries from the Southeast Education Foundation totalling nearly $30,000. Close to 100 people including staff, students, guests and donors attended a special celebration in honour of the award recipients at the Weyburn City Centre Mall.
"Without the generosity of our donors, this day wouldn't be possible," announced awards emcee and SRC's Post-Secondary Program Coordinator, Laura Hamilton, who also expressed thanks on behalf of the College to the donors for their support over the years. From the donations of 12 local businesses and community groups, a total of 28 awards were presented to students in various programs including Hairstylist, Practical Nursing, Electrician, and Adult Basic Education. Many donors and donor representatives attended the event to present their awards.
Southeast Regional College is very proud of the number of students receiving additional funding thanks to the Foundation's scholarship and bursary program.
"This is a definite advantage for those attending a Regional College versus a larger institution," explained SRC Marketing Manager, Dave Harazny. "Because of our smaller classroom sizes and strong donor and community support, students have a greater chance to benefit from additional funding. This makes education more accessible, careers more attainable and fosters community growth," he added.
New this year was the addition of the Saskatchewan Opportunity Scholarship program, initiated by the Ministry of Advanced Education. Through this program, all monies donated for scholarships by private sector and community-based partners are matched by the Government of Saskatchewan. Of the $30,000 awarded in Weyburn, just over $8,000 was contributed through the Saskatchewan Opportunity Scholarship program.
Additional scholarships and bursaries will be awarded to students at SRC's Assiniboia, Estevan, Moosomin, and Whitewood campuses throughout February. If you are a business or an individual and want to make a difference in a student's life by creating a scholarship or bursary, please contact the Southeast Education Foundation.
