A promise of family

Ministerial Moment

Genesis 15:1-6

Abraham had a problem. He and his wife were old and they didn't have any children. God promised, "I'll fix that. You will have a son and a huge family." Abraham was told to go look at the heavens and count the stars. He was told that his family would be uncountable, just like the stars. With the naked eye, a person can see up to 6,000 stars. With the use of the Hubble telescope, not available to Abraham, it is estimated that there are 300 billion stars in our Milky Way and 100 billion galaxies. This is a vast number of stars. God delivered on his promise in an astounding way. Abraham had a son Ishmael by Hagar and Ishmael was the father of the Arabs. Then, he had a son Isaac, by his wife Sarah and Isaac was the father of the Jews. In the world today there are about 14 million Jews and 300 million Arabs. But this isn't the end. The Christians who number about 2.1 billion recognize Abraham as father. So too, the 1.5 billion Muslims, think of Abraham as father. God promised to Abraham that his family would be uncountable, like the stars in the sky. Today, the Jews, the Arabs, the Christians and the Muslims, who make up about 50% of the 7 billion people on earth, all speak of Abraham as father. When Abraham, heard the promise, that seemed impossible, he believed and trusted God. In our lives, there are troubles, mostly vastly different than the problem Abraham faces, but believing the promises of God, as did Abraham, is the best decision to make.
