We are now officially in the season of Fall. The Autumnal Equinox was sometime in the afternoon September 22. Did you notice that the equal light and darkness, shown by the times of sunrise and sunset happened September 25? Why is there a difference? But that topic is for another time. Today we look at seasons of time and signs of the world.
The beauty of the season is the varied colors of the leaves on the trees. Even in our area we see a beautiful array of color, but many like to drive through the Qu'Appelle Valley because of the beauty there. But what is it that causes the leave to turn color? As I understand it, the green is because of the chlorophyl. The "factory" needs sunlight to produce the necessary reaction, and when the amount of sunlight decreases to an amount too low for the "factory", the factory shuts down and the leaves turn color. I am not sure of what determines the color, but that is another issue.
Is it not the same with our lives? Our lives are beautifully designed, and the love of Christ is manufactured in us to flow out to the world. However, the beauty is dependent on the amount of Light that we receive. We are told in John 1:9, 4-5 that "The true Light that enlightens every man was coming into the world." This is because "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it." The problem is that the judgement comes because "the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness, because their deeds were evil." (John 3:19). What this does is cause spiritual death to reign. "For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the Light, lest his deeds are exposed. But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God." (John 3:20-21).
As one looks at what is called entertainment today, it can be understood why much of it is done after dark. The various initiation practices of schools and universities have hit the news recently. Is there any wonder? With the greater emphasis placed on the evils of darkness, we may wonder, "What is next?" When the Light shines through you and me, there will not be any darkness. But the world will work hard to distract everyone from the Light. Various activities are set the same time as worship. Which is winner? True, darkness can not overcome light, but in a life, if one shuts out the light, then the darkness takes over. Are we beautiful because of the Light?
