Through art, children of Weyburn are learning the traditions of different cultures. Different cultures that make up the community of Weyburn.
On the tail of Weyburn's Centennial year, the Sun Country Kids Club brings A Century in the Making Art Gala.
"This was a year-long project with the students of Souris School and members of Sun Country Kids Club, to celebrate Weyburn's centennial," said Shannon Seitz, executive director of the club.
On Saturday, November 9 the kids club will be hosting A Century of Creation where the year-long art project will be unveiled.
Under the artistic guidance of Heather Van der Breggen and Rickee-Lee Webster of Simple...With a Twist, children created an art piece using colour, texture and images of a particular nationality, using several mediums and techniques used by professional artists. Each letter of the word Weyburn represents a different culture.
The finished project is a compilation of different monthly assignments the kids took on with Van der Breggen and Webster. The pieces will be auctioned off at the event.
In addition to the artwork, the Sun Country Kids Club will be unveiling a book that will be available to order. The book explains each letter and why the project was taken on, as well as several photographs of the children doing the artwork.
The gala will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion with cocktails at 5 p.m. and supper to follow at 6 p.m. Tickets are $50 and are available at the legion. Corporate tables are also available by contacting Seitz at 306-861-0123.
All proceeds from the gala go toward the Sun Country Kids Club to help fund more projects like this with local artists.
