Weyburn Red Wings tame pack of Wolves

Weyburn Red Wings forward Ty McLean guides the puck up the ice past LaRonge Ice Wolves defenseman Jorden Rooke during their game December 18 at Crescent Point Place. The Wings annihilated the Ice Wolves 9-1. Next action for the Wings on home ice is against the Estevan Bruins on Monday, December 30 at 7:30 p.m.

The Weyburn Red Wings annihilated the LaRonge Ice Wolves in a 9-1 decision on December 18.

Matt Eng opened the scoring for the Wings in the first period. Just two minutes later, Jacob Jeske scored, and 14 seconds later, Eng banked the third goal. Brendan McKay made it it 4-0, scoring Weyburn's fourth goal in just under four minutes.

"The team played well and worked hard. We got a lot of shots on net, outshooting them, 60-25," said Coach Bryce Thoma. "We finally decided we wanted to shoot the puck."

McKay also scored the fifth goal in the second period while Jon Brumwell banked the sixth. Ty McLean followed to score Weyburn's seventh goal in the second period.

Brian Farkas added another to the Weyburn score in the third, which was finally answered by the Ice Wolves with their lone goal.

Brumwell finished off the Ice Wolves with the ninth goal of the night.

"The lines played well considering they're having a break right away," said Thoma. "They stayed focused and didn't go on holidays a day early."

The Wings will take to the ice on Monday, December 30 against the Estevan Bruins at a game dedicated to former Wings Head Coach Dwight McMillan.

"We've only played them once this season, and we have to play them seven times in the new year. I expect them to be tough games," said Thoma. "They are Weyburn's biggest rival and important points for us."
