Weyburn Police deal with possible theft and phone scams

Comments

The Weyburn Police Service fielded a few calls regarding possible identity theft and phone scams over the last week.

The Weyburn Police Service received a report of a possible case of identity theft. The victim received a telephone call purporting to be from a bank and asking for personal information.

The police also received a complaint of a telephone scam wherein the victim was contacted by phone telling that she had won a substantial amount of money and asking her to send a small fee to collect the prize.

Police stress that in Canada, it is unlawful to collect any fee in order to claim a prize. In this case the victim became wise to the scam very quickly and did not suffer any loss.

A report from a local financial institution was received regarding a possible fraud involving an account at the financial institution. As a result of the investigation a 48-year-old female has been charged for fraud less than $5000.

Police arrested and charged a 32-year-old man with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime as a result of a traffic stop where the vehicle was being operated without valid registration. The vehicle was seized and police are continuing their investigation into the drug activity. The man was released from custody and will appear in court at a later date.

Police are investigating a suspicious minor vehicle collision where the vehicle was abandoned at the scene the driver having fled on foot.

A 21-year-old man was charged for operating an unregistered vehicle and driving without a licence as the result of a police traffic stop. The vehicle was impounded.

A 43-year-old male was arrested and has been charged with assault and breaching conditions as a result of the police response to a call to a residence where a female had been assaulted. The 43-year-old man will make a court appearance.
