Archery is best known for its use in combat and for hunting. More recently it's seen as a great recreational activity and competitive sport.
The Weyburn Wildlife Federation Archery Club is holding their grand opening event on Saturday, February 22 at the new facility in Goodwater from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The former 4,300 square foot Goodwater Curling Rink is now home to an indoor six lane archery range that will be open year round. The lanes range in length from 10 yards to 40 yards.
"Holding a grand opening allows people that want to come out to see and try out the range and also pick up their memberships," said Morley Forsgren, archery club director.
The archery club will be holding a special ribbon cutting with Kris Cheater, host of Maximus Outdoor Adventure airing on Wild TV and the Sportsman Channel.
Recently, the archery club has implemented a youth/adult archery program which is held in the Queen Elizabeth School gym with 48 students involved.
The Weyburn Wildlife Federation Archery Club's aim is to see the Goodwater facility used to promote archery not only for hunters, but as a fun family sport, said Forsgren.
The archery club is the brain child of Tyson Calladine and Forsgren who have been members of the Weyburn Wildlife Federation and wanted to get an archery range up and running for the area. They approached the Goodwater community centre to ask about facilities that would accommodate an archery range, and the community centre offered the curling rink to the club.
At the grand opening, attendants will have a chance at door prizes, a 50/50 draw as well as archery games for prizes. They will also hold a hamburger, hotdog barbeque as well as a youth archery demonstration. All proceeds from the barbeque will go toward the club.
Memberships will be available on site. The Weyburn Wildlife Federation Archery Club membership feers for 2014 are $100 for individuals and a family of four for $150. Members also must pay a membership to the Weyburn Wildlife Federation of $20 for a regular member, $6 for an affiliate member or $30 for a family membership.
Memberships are available at Edge Safety and Supply, Under Your Skin Tattoo, the Goodwater Machine Shop or by calling coordinators, Morley Forsgren at 306-861-0843 or John Tilley at 306-421-9244.
The club has a regular shooting night every Wednesday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
