I have a hard time asking for help. Do you? Where do you fit on the continuum between "complete and absolute denial" and "soul-sucking leech"? I dare you to ask your spouse, or your parents what they think! Some days it's tough to find that balance isn't it?
Last week my wise wife pointed out to me that I needed to ask for help. And so I did (because MY wife is ALWAYS right - actually, all sarcasm aside, she usually is, darn it). When I asked for help, I was blessed enough to find myself surrounded by supportive friends who were encouraging and insightful. I recognize that this is not always the case, so I'm grateful to have found help in my time of need.
The Bible says that "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1-3) However, when I ask God for help, I am often disappointed or feel let down with the KIND and TIMING of His help. God rarely helps me in the way that I think a God should help. Have you ever experienced this? When I ask God for help, I expect His help to be, you know, "God-like": a giant voice directing others to do what I KNOW they should do; a massive hand sweeping down from the sky and lifting people from harm's way; a waterfall of money or a blinking neon sign saying, Go THIS way". I have to be honest - I don't think God has "helped" me in ANY of those ways.
So I need to reframe my expectations based on what the Bible ACTUALLY says about "God-like" help. Notice that it doesn't say He's my RESCUE, just my REFUGE. He provides STRENGTH and His PRESENCE when I'm in trouble. God's help usually comes through empowering ME.
Are you in trouble these days? Do you need some help? Maybe you could start by calling out to God and freeing Him to work in His way, in His time. Maybe you could take a risk and reach out to some friends. Keep in mind that they also will have their own ways of helping, in their own time. Whatever you decide, remember that God is "ever present" - He's always there. You are NEVER alone, no matter how bad things get.
May God bless you with all the help and support you need today.
