Preserving the honour of women in statue

Comments

In an effort to preserve and honour the women of the early years, a community-based Pioneer Woman Statue committee has been formed.

"This is an opportunity to educate the community on the women who came here and stood by their men in those very, very early years," said Ross McMurtry, who chairs the committee.

The committee approached the City of Weyburn to enter into an agreement with them to bring this statue to life.

"The statue was a dream of mine to start with, but now it is shared by six other people," said McMurtry.

At their regular council meeting the City of Weyburn approved entering into the agreement and as part, will provide up to $30,000 for this project, as well as assume the responsibility of maintaining and providing for the cost of the concrete base.

McMurtry said the total cost of the project to be approximately $120,000.

Don and Shirley Begg of Studio West Bronze Foundry and Art Gallery, located in Cochrane, Alberta, will be creating the life size statue to be erected in Weyburn.

A location for the statue has yet to be determined by the group, but McMurtry said it's the committee's hope it will be located along the Boardwalk.
