International Women of Weyburn lean on each other for support

Comments

Regina singer/songwriter Ann-Marie Selenski performed for the International Women of Weyburn group at the Weyburn Public Library on May 2. The group meets the first Friday of every month and all women are welcome to attend.

They packed up their belongings, leaving behind everything that was familiar to them, and came to Weyburn.

A group of women from foreign countries get together on the first Friday of every month at the Weyburn Public Library to share their stories, gain support and teach and learn from each other. The International Women of Weyburn celebrate their togetherness through experiences and acceptance.

Bindu Cherian is the facilitator for the group that has been meeting for approximately one year.

"The group consists of four core ladies, but accept anyone to come and share," she said.

On May 2, the group met with women representing eight countries including, Indonesia, India, South Korea, Ghana, Nigera, Mexico and Canada. They shared laughs and food and listened to the musical stylings of Regina singer/songwriter Ann-Marie Selenski.

"Each person is so valuable, so loved and so unique," said Selenski in speaking to the crowd of women, adding the International Women of Weyburn group displays that kind of uniqueness.

"A year ago there was an International Christmas, and we found out about a similar group that met," said Cherian. "We were approached by Kam Teo (librarian at the Weyburn Public Library) and he encouraged us to take it and run with it."

Soon, the group took form, sometimes having more than 10 ladies at meetings.

"You can find in these groups trustworthy friends and those friendships can be handy when you're new to a country and you're not sure of anything," said Cherian.

Everyone is welcome and the meetings are completely confidential.
