VICTORIA - A decision by a B.C. legislative committee on the anti-HST petition has been put off.

The Liberal majority in the 10-member committee voted to adjourn debate on the issue until the next committee meeting Sept. 13.

Fight HST organizer Chris Delaney went into the meeting hoping the committee would make a quick decision and move the petition into the legislature for a free vote by MLAs.

The committee elected Liberal Terry Lake as its chairman who told the committee that it was the first time such a petition has come before a committee since the legislation was introduced 16 year ago.

Former premier Bill Vander Zalm who led the petition drive didn't attend the committee meeting because he was attending a funeral.

The committee has 90 days to decide what to do with the legislation, and the choices are send it to the legislature for a vote or send it to B.C. voters in a non-binding referendum.
