WASHINGTON - The mother of Trayvon Martin says states must clarify so-called "stand your ground" self-defence laws.

Sybrina Fulton is testifying before a Senate committee Tuesday. She has vowed to keep pressure on state legislators to repeal or overhaul those laws.

Fulton has said neighbourhood-watch volunteer George Zimmerman "got away with murder" in the 2012 killing of her son, largely because of Florida's policy. Such laws in at least 22 states generally eliminate a person's duty to retreat in the face of a serious physical threat.

In July, a jury acquitted the 29-year-old Zimmerman of all charges in the February 2012 shooting death of Trayvon, who was 17 and unarmed. Gun control advocates say states should re-examine their laws, but gun rights advocates say that's a swipe at the right to self-defence.
