Local photographer Chris Borshowa has a unique way of observing the world around him, and using those inspirations to create unique artwork. Now with the freedom of a studio space, called Dark Horse Studios, Borshowa feels that he has taken the next step in his photography career.
“I am at the point now where the stuff that I want to do requires space, and I need to be able to come to a studio space whenever I want and do whatever I want in that space,” said Borshowa.
“Before I was using my apartment or renting a dance studio, and that was working fine, but now this studio space is my own. I think that is important to any artist to have your own space to work in.”
“I am very a behind-the-scenes kind of person. I like to show the different aspects of my work, including the many different locations or poses that I use,” said Borshowa. “I will get an idea in my head and like to select my models to help bring that project to life. Other times, someone will contact me with project ideas. The biggest thing is to know the person and bring that project to life.”
One of the biggest challenges facing Borshowa was finding the right place that met his expectations. “There are a lot of places in town that were functional, but not for what I needed. It was also a struggle to find a place that was affordable. An opportunity popped up at the right time, and then it came together really easily.”
“The freedom of having studio space is a huge achievement for me,” said Borshowa. “It is nice to have my own space and create whatever I want, whenever I want. I am still on Cloud Nine about that.”
Borshowa already had one amazing experience in his new studio, since he completed a photo shoot for “Breaking the Silence: Our Journey To Healing”, a book project collecting the stories of mental health issues.
“That was my first real shoot in my new studio and it was really fun. That book is all about new beginnings. It was an amazing experience. I am really humbled that they asked me to shoot the cover of a book. They also gave me the freedom to do whatever I wanted.”
Borshowa also completed his newest photography exhibit “Coven” at his new studio. He will be showing the “Coven” exhibit during a grand opening of his studio on Saturday, July 22.
It is quite exciting for Borshowa to have these opportunities to have his artwork displayed in a fine art aspect. “This is where I want my direction to go. I want to have a purpose and for the photography to mean something.”
“I am now at the point in my photography career where I can choose the projects that I want to work on. Taking pictures makes me happy and seeing the expression on other people’s faces is making me happy.”
