Library to be busy with September programs

The Weyburn Public Library will hold a wide variety of programs and activities for all age groups and interests through the month of September, including events to mark Science Literacy Week.

The Weyburn Public Library will hold a wide variety of programs and activities for all age groups and interests through the month of September, including events to mark Science Literacy Week.
Programs for children and families include activities such as Think Tanks for different age groups, family movies, the Kidzone, and the Studio A Creative Club. Among the special events is a Mad Scientist activity on Saturday, Sept. 23, with a session at 10 a.m. for children aged six to eight, and at 2 p.m. for those aged nine to 12. This latter session will include a variety of experiments for children to enjoy.
Think Tank sessions, including programming of robots and engineering of rollercoasters and catapults, will be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays for seven to nine-year-olds, and on second and fourth Thursdays for 10 to 14-year-olds, all at 3:45-5 p.m.
Kidzone sessions start on Sept. 21, and will run after school on the first and third Thursdays of the month for children aged six to 10, featuring a variety of games and activities. The Studio A Creative Club also runs after school on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, and begins Sept. 19. Sessions for X-box and board games will run on Wednesdays after school, for those aged seven to 12. The teen games night will be feature the Playstation Virtual Reality games for those aged 13-18.
The library will hold two events for Culture Days on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 1-4 p.m. The first is a music extravaganza where people can check out different stations and make musical instruments from other cultures, including rainsticks, African drums, marraccas and others.
The second is a presentation of the library and the International Women of Weyburn, which will put on a Multicultural Fair, with displays and food samples from various cultures.
Programs for teens and adults include a session on basic photography on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m., with local photographer Jon Gillies. A session on making steampunk picture frames will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m., and there will be a 3D printing orientation on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m., and Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. This is a new innovation at the Weyburn library, and those interested can learn how to select, design and create a 3D model of their own idea.
The orientation is a requirement in order to be allowed to use the technology at the library. More orientation times will be scheduled for October.
Adults can also take in a Friday matinee movie at 2 p.m. Movies that will be shown in upcoming days include “Mr. Holland’s Opus” on Sept. 15, “Maverick” on Sept. 22 and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” on Sept. 29.
The adult book club will meet on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. to talk about the book, “Thirteen Reasons Why” by Jay Asher. The book in October will be “Five Quarters of an Orange” by Joanne Harris.
