Members of the Weyburn 4-H Beef club have been hitting the spring steer and heifer jackpots with their calves. Several members took part in the Southeast Calf Cruise in Weyburn on May 13 and Lord of the Rings Stock Show in Estevan on May 14.
For some members, it was a valuable experience getting out to the first show and getting the jitters out of the way, and for others it was about competing for the top prizes.
Jacey Fellner was one of the club’s big winners, receiving the people’s choice award for her steer. Austin Knupp came out on top in his commercial heifer division class. Many of the club’s members participated and placed very well in their classes.
Being in 4-H in an individual project does not limit the members to participating in events with that project. Steele Sylvestor participated in the Whitewood regional 4-H judging competition on April 22. The members judge various different types of animals and sometimes forages or grains. Steele won third overall high point cloverbud. She was also second in hogs, dairy cows, and beef bulls.
Learning to judge is beneficial for members to acquire skills in written and oral reasoning. This helps members in every aspect of their lives with public speaking
and decision making.
In other news, the achievement day for the club is set for Saturday, July 1, at the
fair grounds. This is a great opportunity to see the members groom and show all their animals. There are 42 members in the Weyburn Beef Club, making it a very full day to show heifers, cow/calf pairs and steers. The public is welcome to join the club for the show.
