The 2017-18 school year has begun at the Weyburn Comprehensive School and the teachers met this past week to make sure that everything is in place. Students registered and started classes on Sept. 5 and the academic portion of the school year began. Besides that the extra-curricular programs have started up including football, volleyball, soccer and cross-country. Sign-up sheets have already been posted for many of the other groups in the school.
This year will see over 900 students from Grades 7 to 12 at WCS. Although last year was considered a success in integrating the two schools, this year will even be better with everyone settling into a routine that was developed over the past year.
Sporting events coming up this weekend, Sept. 8 and 9, include volleyball tournaments for the senior girls in Regina, senior boys in Oxbow and junior girls in Carlyle. As well the girls soccer team is in Swift Current. The Eagles football team is opening their season with a home game on Saturday against Swift Current starting at 1 p.m. at Darold Kot Field.
The athletes work hard in their activity and present a very entertaining product on the field and in the gym. If there is an admission price, it is always reasonable. This also applies to the many musical productions from concerts to stage shows, SRC events, class presentations and many good speakers.
All of this requires time and money and there will be a number of fundraisers, like community cards, fowl supper and fruit sales that hopefully the community will support.
The week of Sept. 11 to 15 will be welcome week, which will include a pancake breakfast on Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 7 to 9 a.m. in the Colleen Weimer Hall. Parents, families and friends are invited to come and help kick off the new school year with good food and socializing.
