Diabetes Canada celebrated a number of volunteers in Saskatchewan this year for their efforts in supporting people living with diabetes or prediabetes. Diabetes Canada volunteers provide education and services to people living with or at risk of diabetes, advocate on behalf of people living with diabetes, support innovative research and set the standard for diabetes care.
The Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Terra Jacobsen of Weyburn. Terra has been involved with Diabetes Canada since she first started fundraising for a Team Diabetes event in 2013.
Diabetes is close to Terra’s heart as she has many family members living with type 2 diabetes and a relative who also passed away due to the complications of the disease. Terra takes all opportunities within her community to emphasize the importance of physical activity, the health of people living with diabetes, Diabetes Canada and the Team Diabetes program.
To date, Terra has raised more than $33,000 for diabetes research, education, services and programs, and that amount will continue to grow as she continues to fundraise for the cause.
“We are grateful for the time, energy and expertise our volunteers share with us and the communities they serve in the fight to end diabetes,” said Brie Hnetka, regional director for Saskatchewan with Diabetes Canada. “Our volunteers allow us to reach so many more people and provide programs and services that are making a real difference. We were thrilled to formally acknowledge the outstanding work of our volunteers and supporters by presenting them with an award.”
Diabetes Canada is the registered national charitable organization that is making the invisible epidemic of diabetes visible and urgent.
