Stars on Ice


The Weyburn Skating Club's senior skaters performed at Saskatchewan's Stars on Ice Bursary Road Show at Crescent Point Place on March 2. Several Saskatchewan figure skaters performed including the Saskatchewan Provincial Team and members of Saskatchewan's High Performance Figure Skating Team which included Ricki Giroux and Jayme Nagy of Weyburn.

Members of Saskatchewan's High Performance Figure Skating Team Paige Lawrence and Rudi Swiegers performed at the Stars on Ice show at Crescent Point Place on March 2. The show was hosted by the Weyburn Skating Club and included several high-calibre athletes from across Saskatchewan and nationally renowned figure skater Sebastien Wolfe from Quebec.


Geisler competes in qualifier
Weyburn's Crysta Geisler entered the Sandy Roberts Tier 6 & 7 synchronized swimming provincial championship, which was held in Regina on February 27 and 28.
Geisler finished third in the Tier 6 figures 16-and-over age group. Her score of 64.179 put her seventh overall among all age groups in the province.
Geisler has trained with the Weyburn Synchro Stars for several years. This season she decided to pursue her dream of competing in the 2011 Canada Winter Games. She is now commuting from Weyburn to Regina to swim with the Regina Synchro Club for 14 hours a week.


Weyburn will face Yorkton

The Weyburn Red Wings will face the Yorkton Terriers in an SJHL Sherwood Conference semi-final.
Yorkton eliminated the Melville Millionaires in four games in a first round, best-of-five series. Yorkton finished the regular season nine points behind Melville, but Yorkton rattled off three straight wins to upset Melville.
The Red Wings were 5-1 against the Terriers this season. Weyburn won the final five meetings between the two clubs.
Weyburn led the conference, and the league, with a 39-13-0-6 record and 84 points. Yorkton finished fifth in the conference with a 24-30-3-1 record and 52 points.
The series schedule is as follows:
*Game 1: Yorkton at Weyburn on Friday, March 5
*Game 2: Weyburn at Yorkton on Saturday, March 6
*Game 3: Yorkton at Weyburn on Monday, March 8
*Game 4: Weyburn at Yorkton on Wednesday, March 10
*Game 5: Yorkton at Weyburn on Friday, March 12 (If necessary)
*Game 6: Weyburn at Yorkton on Saturday, March 13 (If necessary)
*Game 7: Yorkton at Weyburn on Tuesday, March 16 (If necessary)


Weyburn players compete in water polo tournament
Russell Lenferna scored 12 goals and was named Saskatchewan's game MVP three times at the 2010 International Valentine's Water Polo Tournament in Victoria, B.C.

Several Weyburn water polo players were selected to play for Team Saskatchewan in the 2010 International Valentine's Water Polo Tournament that was held at the Commonwealth Place Pool in Victoria, B.C. from February 25 to 28.
Team Saskatchewan played against B.C. teams from Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and Nanaimo; Alberta teams from Edmonton and Calgary; and a Washington/Oregon team.
Brett Farr and Dakken Bedore played for the bantam boys' team that finished with two wins and three losses. Farr scored four goals during the tournament while Bedore had nine markers. Bedore was also named Saskatchewan's game MVP twice.
Russell Lenferna played for the male cadets team that posted two wins and three losses. Lenferna scored 12 goals and was named Saskatchewan's game MVP three times.
Callahan Huebner, Jenna Haupstein and goalie Kelsey Jensen played for the female cadets team that had three wins and two losses. They won the bronze medal.
Haupstein netted two goals during the tournament.


Petrobank Wings conclude regular season
The Weyburn Petrobank Midget AA Wings wrapped up their regular season with a tie and a win.
Weyburn played the Pipestone Valley Jets to a 6-6 draw on February 23. Josh Lees, Kody Thue, Garret Walbaum, Austin Roesslein, Casey Pirio and Cody Miller scored for Weyburn.
Jackson Schneider had three assists. Walbaum and Thomas Carleton had the other helpers.
Codi Sjostrand was in goal.
Weyburn defeated the Regina Flames 8-2 in their final regular season game. Lees led Weyburn with two goals and an assist. Marc Henderson had a goal and two assists. Carleton, Zach Brown and Brayden Leslie each had a goal and an assist.
Roesslein and Andrew Cretin also scored. Miller, Kalum Brennan, Jackson Wagner and Eric Evans had assists.
Tristan Haupstein was in net.
Weyburn finished the regular season with a 24-6-6 record, and 54 points.


Hitmen advance in provincials

The Weyburn Bantam A JHC Hitmen have advanced to the third round of provincials.
Weyburn defeated Swift Current 6-3 in a two-game, total-goal series.
Swift Current won Game 1 3-2 in Swift Current. Cole Bourassa and Trenton Kauf scored for Weyburn. Ketter Hoium and Aaron Dionne had the assists. Dylan Hockley was in net.
Weyburn shut out Swift Current 4-0 in Weyburn in Game 2 on February 28. Dionne scored twice. Kauf and Kelly Tomiski had the other Weyburn goals. Tomiski's goal in the first period proved to be the series-winner.
Karsen Ness, Jeff Whitrow and Reece Williams had the assists.
Dane Von Hagen had the shutout win.
Weyburn will play Milestone in the next round of provincials.
The Hitmen are also preparing for the start of the South Central Minor Hockey League's playoffs. Weyburn will play Estevan in the opening round. Weyburn eliminated Estevan in the first round of provincials.
