After last year’s successful Sweeping for STARS bonspiel in Weyburn, local organizers are holding another curling fundraiser in the community on February 4.
They say it’s a fun and unique way to support a service that helps save lives in the area and throughout the province.
“The 2016 event was a lot of fun and raised $8,200, so we decided to go for it again this year,” said Patty Skjerdal, chair of the 2017 volunteer bonspiel committee. She noted all proceeds from the event, which includes a silent auction, go directly to supporting STARS in Saskatchewan.
Vanessa Headford, development officer with the STARS Foundation in Regina, was happy to hear the curling event was back for another year, saying the need for community events like this is real.
“While the Saskatchewan government provides roughly 50 per cent of our annual funding, we still need to raise approximately $11 million every year to keep operating,” said Headford. “A significant portion of that support comes from community fundraisers like Sweeping for STARS.”
In the last year alone, STARS has flown 20 missions to Weyburn and at least 15 to neighbouring communities. Since launching in Saskatchewan in 2012, STARS has visited the same area on more than 140 occasions.
Skjerdal said STARS has touched many lives and needs to be supported. “STARS has given a second chance to so many people in the Weyburn area. Let’s enjoy some fun on the ice and raise money to ensure STARS is in the sky for the next person who needs it!”
