There’s no place like the Royal Saskatchewan Museum for the holidays. Throughout the winter break and into the New Year, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum will keep the entire family warm and entertained with fun and educational programming, events and a new display “Coprolite Happens”.
“The holidays are a wonderful time to spend in the company of loved ones,” said Ken Cheveldayoff, Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport. “The Royal Saskatchewan Museum offers programming and events that all members of the family will enjoy as they spend time together during this festive time of year. The RSM certainly contributes to the quality of life enjoyed here in Saskatchewan.”
From December 22 to January 4, 2017, guests can play the role of nature detective, visiting observation stations where they’ll work as a family to solve the mystery of ‘what happened one winter day in the forest’. This drop-in, self-use gallery hunt is designed for ages six to adult.
The Paleo Pit, a playroom featuring colouring and play tables, a climbing structure, discovery wall, and a book nook, is open the same dates from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The whole family will love winter break movies like Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, and Turbo. These movies will be showing on December 27 to 30 and January 3 and 4 at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $3 per person.
Visitors of all ages will be able to use microscopes and their senses to explore drop-in stations which will have an animal track theme in December and snowflake theme in January. Family Explore Stations will be set up on December 27 to 29 and January 2 to 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. New to the Earth Sciences Gallery is Coprolite Happens.
Weighing in at over seven kilograms, the world’s only known T.rex coprolite (fossilized dung) was found right here in Saskatchewan and is on display now.
Visitors should also check out the Snakes Alive exhibit. This exhibit features all nine native species of snakes in Saskatchewan. This lively exhibit will remain open until May 2017.
Brand new this January is Harry Potterpalooza. A Harry Potter fan’s dream; all eight films will be shown in chronological order. The first four will play on January 11 to 14 with the remaining four shown on January 18 - 21. Doors open at 6 p.m., all movies start at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $3 per person or attendees can purchase a Potter Pass and see the entire series for $20.
