Members with the Prairie Sky Co-operative and Cross Country Co-op at Lang voted overwhelmingly to approve amalgamating the Lang operations with the Prairie Sky Co-op. Two meetings were held, the first in Lang on Oct. 10, and then in Weyburn on Oct. 11, where a vote was taken after questions were fielded and a presentation made about why the merger was taking place.
“There were some good questions at the Lang meeting. There was some clarification needed because of the new approach, and most of the comments and questions were fairly positive,” said Co-op general manager Don Kraft.
The Lang meeting had 58 members present who voted 57-1 in favour of amalgamation, while the Weyburn meeting had 30 members, who voted unanimously in favour.
The merger will take effect on Feb. 3, 2018, said Kraft, and in the meantime, the Co-operative Association will file the proper papers with the provincial corporations branch to formalize the amalgamation.
The Lang Co-op will not lose any of their five employees, said Kraft, noting Lang was very strongly into selling tires and agro services and products, which will continue.
The Co-op will do a feasibility study about the possibility of expanding the agro services and products available in Lang, and the plan is to bring in some basic grocery items, as there is currently no store in Lang that offers food items. The Cross Country Co-op will have an associate non-voting board member join the nine-member board of Prairie Sky Co-op for the next fiscal year, which will be for 2018-19, and after that, the Lang members can field candidates in the annual board elections, said Kraft.
“We look forward to new opportunities with the Lang operations,” said Kraft.
