The Weyburn Police Department doors are revolving. After seeing Sergeant Trevor Hughes retire last month and Sergeant Garth Oberkirsch retire last week, the doors have swung open to welcome two new much-needed officers. These officers will fill two of the vacant spots at the department.

Family and friends joined members of the Board of Police Commissioners and Chief Marlo Pritchard at the swearing in ceremony held January 9 at Police Headquarters. Pritchard, who led the ceremony, discussed the importance of wearing the badge the recruits will receive after completing their five months of training. Once an officer wears a badge, duty to others takes precedence over self. Mayor Debra Button, who is a member of the Weyburn Board of Police Commissioners, along with fellow members Andrew Arsky and Don Ehman, also attended the event.

Ehman led the officers, beginning with Constable Alyssa Kazcmar, in the ceremony. Kazcmar has been living in Regina for several years, where she has worked with Child Protective Services, an experience which will benefit her in her new role at the department. Constable Gord Gateman, who has already spent four years volunteering with the Weyburn Fire Department, was next to be sworn in. Gateman has lived in Weyburn for the past six years, and his volunteering at the local fire station is indicative of his special interest in emergency services. To conclude the swearing in ceremony, everyone was invited to share coffee and cake with the new Constables.
