Wanted: two or three superheroes, of any universe, who want to do good for the people of Weyburn and area.
The Weyburn and District United Way have begun their search for “Superheroes”, who will be the face of the United Way and help power them towards raising funds for their 13 member agencies at the Communithon fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 19.
Formerly, the United Way had always recruited young people to be Captain United and Lady Charity, but in recent years the organization has switched things up and now enlist the help of superheroes who will don a cape and help encourage people to get into the spirit of the Communithon.
The United Way invite students in Grade 10, 11 or 12 to apply. Costumes can either be supplied, or they can supply their own if they wish, said Amy Mohr of the United Way board.
Last year’s superheroes, Landon Field and Taylor Cameron, appeared as Superman and Supergirl.
The main requirement for the superheroes is to be present for the entire day on Oct. 19 at Communithon, which will be held at the Cugnet Centre from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and upon request at fundraiser events prior to Communithon, such as at city and area schools or businesses.
“They should be energetic, don’t mind being in the spotlight, be out-going and have a passion for helping the community,” said Mohr, adding they need the applications as soon as possible.

“We want them to be the face of the Communithon and get people excited, and remind people why it’s important to support the United Way,” said Mohr.
For Communithon, organizers are looking for applications for providing entertainment throughout the day, including from schools, churches, choirs, bands, dancers or singers. Forms to enter as an entertainer at Communithon can be found on the United Way’s website, at www.weyburnunitedway.com, and the deadline for entertainment is Friday, Oct. 12.
A feature event this year will be a “minute-to-win-it” contest for businesses or organizations to take part in at Communithon.
There will be a canteen set up in the Cugnet Centre, with snack items such as taco-in-a-bag, candy, water, tea and coffee.
“We encourage people to come and watch the entertainment and enjoy some food, and support the Weyburn United Way,” said Sabrina Kraft, United Way president.
Businesses that would like to host a barbecue or other fundraiser for the United Way are encouraged to let the United Way know, and they can assist with letting the community know about the event. Also, businesses, groups or individuals wishing to make a donation on-air at Communithon will also be given that opportunity.
The full day of entertainment will be broadcast by Access TV on the community channel.
