Yellow Grass School starts the school year with busy schedule

Yellow Grass — The Yellow Grass School year is in full swing. The staff includes principal Tyson O’Dell, and teachers Rebecca Bowerin, Tricia Klemenz, Shelby Van De Woestyne, Jenna Styre, Meaghan Andrew, Jane Peters, Dellice Saxby, Leah Watson and Jodi Tronson.

The administrative assistant is Carol Irvine, and education assistants are Lynn Fawcett, Robyn Byrns and Johanna Tiefenbach. The library tech is Betty Guest, caretaker is Carrie Moore, bus drivers are Janet Guest, Helen Sydorko and Dag Boesgaard, the speech-language pathologist is Amy Burton, school counselor is Twyla Kot and career development counselor is Pat Podjan.

The school is taking orders for YGS school clothing. This includes T-shirts, hoodies and sweatpants, and are available in youth and adult sizes. Payment is due by Friday, Sept. 28. For more information, contact the school at 306-465-2500.

The school held their Terry Fox school run on Thursday. Rather than having pledge sheets, they asked participants to contribute a loonie or a toonie towards the Terry Fox Foundation.

The annual magazine fundraiser for Grades 7-12 kicked off on Sept. 17, with the goal to sell 200 items. Money raised will be used to run SRC-related events.

Orange Shirt day will be recognized at the school on Sept. 28, in honour of and reconciliation for those who attended residential schools.

Picture day for Yellow Grass School will be held in the school gym on Friday, Oct. 5, starting at 9 a.m. Retake day will be on Monday, Oct. 29. No classes will be held on Monday, Oct. 8, for the Thanksgiving holiday, and there are no classes on Friday, Oct. 12, as this is professional development day.

An open house was held on Sept. 13 at Yellow Grass School, and was a great success. The School Community Council provided beef on a bun, chips and ice cream for $2 a person. All families attending were entitled to enter a draw for student clothing. There were small teacher-led sessions, explaining some of the programs used at the school.

The sessions included Jump Math, which is a Grade 1/2 math program; the Seesaw app for kindergarten and Grades 5-10; class Dojo, for Gr. 1-4; and the Online Class Exploration for Gr. 10-12 online students. Families were also encouraged to meet the teachers, take a tour of the school and view some of the upgrades.

Lone Wilkinson, formerly of Yellow Grass, passed away on Sept. 4 at the age of 89 years. A service of remembrance was held on Sept. 22 from Grace United Church in Weyburn. Rev. M. Barnabas officiated, and interment will be held at a later date.

The Yellow Grass Public Library will hold a Thanksgiving-themed craft, story and snack time on Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 3:30-5 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Yellow Grass Readers Book Club will meet on Monday, Oct. 15 from 6:30-7:30 in the library. At this time the members will discuss the book, “Rink Burgers” by Todd Devonshire.

The winners of cribbage at the Drop-in Centre on Sept 7 were Otto Dreger in first, Sue Wood in Second, and Grace Quigley in third.

The winners of cribbage on Sept. 14 were Ruth Boren in first, Otto Dreger in second and Grace Quigley in third.
