SaskEnergy recently announced the winners of a contest that selected 24 lucky young curlers to play a special role during the 2012 Tim Hortons Brier, which will take place March 3 to11 at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon.
The competition was open to curlers between the ages of 12 and 18 who are affiliated with a junior curling team in Saskatchewan. Selection was based on 100-word essays submitted by each entrant describing why they should be a SaskEnergy Junior Star, as well as an outline of their community involvement.
"We are truly excited to sponsor the Junior Stars and provide these young curlers with first-hand experience of what it takes to reach the highest level of their sport," said Shannon Doka, Community Involvement Leader for SaskEnergy. "Congratulations to all the winners, as we know this will be an experience of a lifetime."
The winners will serve as honourary members of the teams competing at the Brier and will each receive a SaskEnergy Junior Stars jacket, a commemorative gift from SaskEnergy and the 2012 Tim Hortons Brier, as well as three tickets to their assigned team's game.
After meeting with their team for a photograph and joining them at ice-level for warm ups, the stars will be introduced at a special pre-game ceremony and go behind the scenes to meet the TSN broadcast crew.
The SaskEnergy Junior Stars winners from the Weyburn area include Ashley Skjerdal from Weyburn and Austen Carles from Radville. Skjerdal has been assigned to Team New Brunswick and Carles will be with Team Nova Scotia.

"It's an important part of the development of a new generation of athletes who will ultimately represent our province in upcoming national and international events."
