Spencer sets National record

Five athletes from Weyburn competed at the North American Power-lifting Championships in Moose Jaw from July 8-13. Marnel Spencer competed in the 47 kg Classic Master 2 category. She squatted 67.

Marnel Spencer set a new National and North American record at the North American Power-lifting Championship, held recently in Moose Jaw.

Five athletes from Weyburn competed at the North American Power-lifting Championships in Moose Jaw from July 8-13.


Marnel Spencer competed in the 47 kg Classic Master 2 category. She squatted 67.5 kg, bench pressed 46 kg, and finished off her day with a deadlift of 95 kg to put her in second place in her division. Her bench press was a new national record as well as a North American record.


Mikayla Lohse competed in the 52 kg Sub-Junior division. She squatted 125 kg, bench pressed 62.5 kg, and deadlifted 143 kg. She ended the day in second place in a close battle with her nearest competitor with only 2 kg difference between her and the first place competitor from Puerto Rico.


Heidi Fowler finished off the first day with a squat of 145 kg, a bench press of 102.5 kg, and a deadlift of 140 kg, putting her in third place in the 84 Kg Open Category.


Brittinay Rowland competed on the second day of the competition. She squatted 190 kg, bench pressed 115 kg, and deadlifted 165 kg. These numbers put her in the fourth position in the Junior category.


Ryan Fowler was the co-meet director and also lifted on the final day of the competition. He squatted 282.5 kg, bench pressed 255 kg, and deadlifted 262.5 kg for a third place finish in the 120+ Open Division.


The next event for a few of the lifters will be Saskatchewan Provincials, here in Weyburn, on September 5. Everyone is welcome to come out and support your local lifters.
