The Sweeping for STARS bonspiel is back for a third year, thanks to the generous support of Weyburn and area residents. The previous two bonspiels have raised nearly $16,000 for the STARS air ambulance.

The bonspiel will be held on Saturday, January 27, at the Weyburn Curling Club starting at 11 a.m. The cost to enter is $125 per team, and registration includes three four-end games plus supper. Additional supper tickets can be bought for $20 each. To register, call the Curling Club at 306-842-2236.

While the fundraising component is crucial, the bonspiel is also a fun and unique way to support a service that helps save lives in the area and throughout the province. “Sweeping with STARS is an opportunity to have some curling fun while keeping STARS in our prairie skies,” said Kristin Moser, one of the volunteer organizers of the event.

The bonspiel will include a silent auction and 50/50 draw, with all proceeds to go directly to help STARS fight for the lives of critically ill and injured throughout the province.

STARS spokesperson Mark Oddan said his organization’s ability to stay at the forefront of emergency medical care is dependent on the communities it serves.

“We rely on the support of government to help keep us in flight, but to keep us on the cutting edge of critical medical care, we look to our allies – businesses, individual donors, volunteers, and communities like Weyburn who put on events such as this,” he said. “Our allies are the lifeblood behind our life-saving efforts.”

Moser said participating in Sweeping for the STARS is a great way to give back and make a difference, and she hopes attendance will be better than ever.

“Please help us spread the word about this fun, community-building event. Enter your team, and prepare to be swept off your feet for a great cause!”

STARS offers hands-on training to rural medical providers as well as providing rapid, emergency medical transportation for the critically ill and injured. They operate 24/7 from bases in Regina and Saskatoon.
