The community of Weyburn and surrounding area is blessed with the hard work and contributions of volunteer service organizations, such as the Young Fellows Club, Kinsmen and the Rotary Club, just to name a few.

It is also a fact these days that it sometimes is difficult finding the volunteers needed to keep these organizations going, and some have folded along the way, such as the Elks and the Lions — but in some cases, members have gone on with other active organizations, or else they still volunteer their time and resources in other ways, to community events or churches, boards or schools.

There are service groups in the city and area that could use a hand in a few different ways, whether by support or from volunteer efforts.

One is the upcoming provincial festival for community theatres, TheatreFest, which will be hosted in Weyburn during the week of April 1-8. They require volunteers to help in many various ways, from driving a shuttle van to being a host or hostess, to helping decorate the Green Room, among other things.

This will be an exciting provincial event to come to Weyburn, with theatre groups from throughout the province coming to compete along with Weyburn’s own Crocus 80 Theatre group, and this event would be well worth the effort for community-minded individuals to come forward and lend a hand.

Another upcoming event is the “Legends” concert that the Weyburn Rotary Club is putting on, at the Cugnet Centre on Friday, March 23.

This event isn’t in need so much of volunteers (although none would be turned away), but rather the need is for support from music lovers in the community to buy concert tickets.

The event is one of the ways that Rotary raises funds for their work, as they support many groups and causes in the community, from the Rotary Music Festival to the Care-A-Van and the “Books for Babies” literacy program at the Weyburn Public Library, to just name a few.

They support youth in many ways, including scholarships for the Weyburn Comprehensive School and through the Music Festival, sending future leaders to the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership) camps, sponsoring students to go on exchange and hosting an international exchange student here for the year. The current exchange student abroad is Hannah Bitz, who is in Belgium, and the Weyburn club is hosting Liza Biard from France for this school year.

In addition, Rotary also supports international programs, such as the international effort to eradicate polio. In short, the club makes an effort to make this world a better place to live, and they ask for your support for their fundraisers, including this concert.
