Now in its second year, the #EveryPlateFull campaign is once again urging Canadians to address the 26,548,725 summer meal gap that is facing Canadians struggling with hunger.
The Salvation Army is joining in to raise support in Weyburn and surrounding area. During the month of May, over 120 food bank organizations are raising much needed food and funds to ensure shelves are full during the summer months. Food donations are at their lowest from May to August, and the Salvation Army Food Banks shelves often go close to empty at a time when the need doesn’t diminish.
“Roughly 100 men, women and children in our community access the food bank each month” says Jennifer Lorinczy, Community Ministries Coordinator with the Salvation Army. “With community support we can ensure no one’s plate has to be empty.”
The Salvation Army is running a Plate– O–Meter for the month of May, the goal is to raise 2,500 pounds of food for the food bank. The meter is on display at the Salvation Army office and will be updated as the food and monetary donations come in.
To see the updates, residents can checkout the Salvation Army Weyburn Facebook page. Any groups or businesses who are interested in hosting a food drive or making any kind of donation can stop in at the Salvation Army office, located at 126 Fourth Street NE.
Items that are always in need at the food bank are: Kraft Dinner; tomato, mushroom and vegetable soups; 1 litre juices; juice boxes; pasta sauce; canned fruits and vegetables; canned pasta; salad dressing; coffee; peanut butter and jam; cheese whiz; peanut-free school snacks; brown beans; and canned meat.
